Design for Wellness : Exploring Colonial
Heritage infused with the Kampong Spirit
Recalling kampong wells and verandas of the black-and-white houses, the walled-in air well was opened up to become the natural social and practical heart of the home. The open heart visually connects split level spaces while pumping bright, fresh air into indoor corners. Ideal for assorted activities or just to hang out after a long day.
Key areas such as the entrance foyer, dining, master bedroom and master bath were extended and outfitted to meet modern standards. Yet the true value-add was in the steady stream of natural light and air-achieved by strategically knocking down walls and/or adding openable glass panels.
The liberal influx of bright openness and fresh breeze with selective use of modern adapted heritage finishes and fittings – that is perhaps where Kampong spirit high-fives Colonial.
